The mission is huge and the workers are few; however, the Domestic Violence Coalition continues to believe that education and ongoing student and teacher support is the only way to achieve a cultural shift in respect and responsibility.
With that in mind, one of the ways you can make an impact in your school is to invite us to speak in a classroom, assembly, or group setting. Amy has an amazing way of connecting real solutions with real life scenarios to any and every student regardless of where they see themselves in the "food chain" of hierarchy with their peers.
Amy holds a degree from Spring Arbor University in Family Life Education and uses age appropriate research and evidence based curriculum, educational videos, role playing games, PowerPoint, music videos, and discussion to move your students from a "me" centered world, to an "us" centered one. In essence, the objective is to bring up the level of empathy in each student towards others about how it feels to be on the receiving end of harassment, bullying, or abuse. On the flip side of tolerance is empowerment. Amy encourages bystanders and student leaders, to recognize someone who is in trouble and to learn how to intervene or support a victim. She also teaches those who feel victimized how to seek help -- if no one is available, Amy offers her advocacy services and then works with the school to bring these students to safety.
Under the Prevention Education tab, click on Classroom or Assembly Presentations to read about each topic offered. Amy presents on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, either in the a.m. or p.m. On Friday she is open to holding 6 or 8 weekly small group sessions or once a month "Teen Talk" explained under the In School Support Groups tab, during or after school for students who have particular needs such as anger management, conflict resolution, loss, depression, lack of self-worth etc...
On the second Tuesday of each month, at the Domestic Violence Coalition, we offer Parenting Classes to help parents of tween and teens understand how to recognize when their child is in danger. Then Amy will equip parents with how to help their child in situations such as agression, bullying, harassment, suicide, and other life challenges.
